A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
